Camping is a time-honored way to get away from it all and connect with nature, and it’s always more comfortable in a travel trailer. These towable RVs have an incredible variety of sizes, shapes, and layouts, however, and finding the perfect one can be a pain. We here at McGovern’s RV & Marine know your time is precious, so we’ve put together a guide to the different types of travel trailers to get you started. If you want to know more, or you’d like to see the travel trailers we have for sale, contact our store in Grande Prairie, Alberta, today!

Small Trailers

Travel trailers vary wildly in size, so we’ll focus on that. The smallest travel trailers are called pop-up trailers or camper trailers. These tiny RVs are basically a tent on wheels. These are great for the minimalist approach to travel trailers, allowing you the convenience of a level surface and a nicely-sized tent without distracting from your natural surroundings.

A step up in size is the teardrop trailer. Named for their shape, these travel trailers focus on giving you a nice bedroom and utilize most of their interior space to do it. They give you an enclosed and climate-controlled space, but are still affordable and minimalist. Some do come with outdoor kitchenettes accessible by flipping up a cover at the tapered rear of the trailer, though!

These trailers can be towed by most consumer vehicles.

Mid-Size Trailers

Stand-up trailers are highly similar to teardrop trailers, but they’re longer and provide more interior space, divvying it up between a number of residential-style rooms rather than focusing on a bedroom. Depending on the manufacturer and model, they might include a bathroom, interior cooking space, or just some all-purpose living space.

These can be towed by most consumer vehicles, but smaller cars will have trouble with them.

Large Trailers

The largest two varieties of travel trailer are roughly the same size, but use the space differently. A toy hauler will have slightly more living space than a stand-up trailer, but it’s also got a large garage-style space at the rear that makes it much larger. This space can be used however you like, but is intended for storing powersports vehicles so you can enjoy some trailer riding on your trip.

Fifth wheels, however, utilize every inch of a similar amount of space to provide every residential-style luxury possible. These typically include full or queen-size beds in private bedrooms, fully-equipped kitchens and bathrooms, a living space, and some even have slide-outs that extend to maximize internal space. These have the most living and storage space of any travel trailer.

Larger travel trailers will need a powerful tow vehicle to stay safe, so if you don’t own one, you’ll need to rent!
