RV owners have a lot on their plates in terms of maintenance and upkeep. There’s always some little problem that needs to be addressed. If you’re here because your windows are so wet that the kids keep drawing pictures on them, then your RV issue is condensation.

Condensation is simply what happens when there’s too much moisture in the air and it has to condense somewhere, usually on glass and other flat surfaces. As you know, excess moisture can cause mold and mildew to form, in addition to damaging wood and other materials over time, so it’s important to keep tabs on it.

McGovern's RV & Marine is your Alberta RV dealer, located in Grande Prairie. Read on to learn some handy tips for preventing condensation build-up in your RV to reduce damage and clear up your windows!

1. Check Humidity Levels

A hygrometer is a small device that measures the level of moisture already in the air, which is referred to more generally as “humidity.” You can determine what humidity levels cause your RV to fog up and how low the humidity needs to be to clear things out. Humans are typically most comfortable at a humidity level between 30% and 50%, but your preferences may vary. Be mindful of the climate you’re in as well, since especially wet or dry areas can change the conditions in your RV.

2. Remove Sources of Moisture

There are a number of ways that you can contribute to the humidity of your RV without even knowing it. For example, that pile of wet towels and bathing suits from your swim in the lake? It’s absolutely oozing moisture into the air! Get it into the washer posthaste and avoid hanging your clothes up to dry inside your RV.

Other sources of moisture include steam from your shower and steam from cooking in the kitchen. These sources are a little harder to control, since you have to bathe and cook! However, there is one important step you can take to reduce their impact...

3. Ventilate, Ventilate, Ventilate

… that’s right! Open up your RV’s vents and make sure that all your wet air is leaving the interior. You can also open doors and windows and set up box fans to really get the air circulating. Make sure to ventilate after every shower and to open up windows when cooking.
