Your boat is a great way to have fun, relax, or even make a profit, but there are a few items you’ll want to have aboard to do it safely and comfortably. We here at McGovern’s RV & Marine want to help you get the most from every trip, so we’ve put together some of the essential items to bring with you. If you have any questions, or if you just want to see the boats we have for sale, contact our store in Grande Prairie, Alberta, today!

1: Emergency Supplies

As with everything, when it comes to boating you should hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. You’re going to want some emergency supplies aboard in case anything goes wrong. A battery-operated radio, flares, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit should all be included. Make sure to put them somewhere secure, but accessible.

First Aid Kit

Your first aid kit can be a store-bought one, but make sure it has everything you need, including but not limited to:

  • Adhesive bandages.
  • Disinfectants.
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).
  • Bug spray.
  • Anti-itch ointments.
  • Antacids.

2: Life Jackets For Everyone

No matter how long you’re going on the water, every passenger and crew member should have a well-fitted life jacket. Even the strongest swimmers can get disoriented or hit their heads, so these are a must. Make sure younger children have vests with crotch straps to help keep them on securely.

3: Dry Bag

This is a special type of waterproof bag that will keep its content dry, even if it gets splashed. This is where you should keep changes of clothes, towels, electronic devices, keys, wallets, and anything else that you need with you but that can’t get wet. Some can even float, so they can be fished out of the water if they fall in.

4: Entertainment

This is mostly for those who are boating with children. Kids get bored pretty easily, and that can make things unpleasant for the adults, too. Make sure to plan ahead for some fun activities. Even if you aren’t a kid, if you know your attention wanders, consider bringing a book or a movie.

5: Well-Stocked Cooler

Finally, consider how long you’re going to be on the water. If you’ll be out for a while, or if you’ll be missing a major meal, bring along a cooler with snacks, drinks, and—most importantly—water. Staying hydrated is a must, both for your overall health and to keep your focus sharp. The same goes for food. Bring high-protein snacks in your cooler like yogurt, cheese, or sandwiches, or non-perishable snacks like trail mix and granola.
